Salmon Valley Post OfficeBelieved to have been built in 1918, the red log structure was home to Stearns and Gertrude Maude McNeill. Postmaster Stearns McNeill ran a post office out of his home from 1924-1943 while Maude maintained the government library housed in their kitchen and taught school to area children.
The Salmon Valley Post Office became a regular stop for mail, books, and conversation by Salmon Valley, Summit Lake, and Giscome Portage residents making the long trek into Prince George.
After the McNeills left in the early 1950's, the building passed through several hands. In 1983 the Huble Homstead/Giscome Portage Heritage Society was approached to save the historic house from demolition. The Society documented, disassembled, and stored the building until they were able to erect it at the historic Huble Homestead for use as an interpretive centre. The grand opening of the newly restored building was held in October 2001. We shouldn't forget that this building was also a home. If you look closely at the logs you can see the notches where room dividers used to be.
