19. General Store

Built by Ed and Al in 1913, this was a center of trade for prospectors, trappers, railroad construction crews, paddle wheel steamboats, and homesteaders, where they could trade furs, arrange supply shipments, hire a river guide, or buy fresh vegetables. The settlers living in the area could buy things like candy, tobacco, clothes, hardware, and food. The high prices for luxury items like cocoa and sugar were known to upset the occasional traveler. World War I and the popularization of the automobile reduced business, and a 1919 road bypassing the homestead lead to the store being closed, with the two owners moving on to do business elsewhere.
